Year 12 students at Callington Community College have reached the end of the formal selection process. During Autumn 2009 selected students will travel to the USA to visit NASA.
The students have undergone interviews and intelligence tests, given presentations and taken part in team-building activities. They have also done fundraising such as packing bags in local shops, and raised an amazing total of £3700 towards their trip.
Originally it was planned that six students would go, but extra places have been funded by The UK Trade & Investment Department, a local company 'The Pool Guy', and Space Education Adventures, enabling a total of nine altogether.
All the candidates gathered in the CHiiL on July 1st 2009. Mr Mike Grocott, Director of the Space Centre, praised the students, pointing out what they have learned and how far they have come as a result of the selection process. The students watched a slideshow of pictures taken during their team-building activities, and then the Headteacher, Mr Gary Lobbett, presented each one with a certificate and a testimonial letter. After the names of the selected students were read out, gifts and a bouquet were presented to Mike Grocott and to Mrs Lisa Grocott by the students.
The students selected are:
Hattie Ball, Martin Butler, Katie Crowell, James R. Darby, Hywel Gregory, Elspeth MacKellar, Adam Van-Dyke, Mary Webster, Sofia Ziajka
Callington Community College congratulates them all!
